How does a modern natural gas metering station in Querétaro operate?

Mexico’s natural gas infrastructure is expanding as industrial facilities and the transport sector increase their use of natural gas. Operators need systems that do more than measure consumption. They also require continuous access to operating data, reliable telemetry and tools that help them identify abnormal conditions before they affect the process.

Plum technology
across Mexico

One installation using Plum technology is located in Querétaro. The modern pressure-reducing and metering station supplies natural gas to industrial customers and Natural Gas Vehicle infrastructure.

The station was designed and commissioned by Plum’s Mexican partner, GENSA. Plum measurement and telemetry devices were integrated into the complete pressure-reduction system.

challenge: accurate measurement
under changing conditions

Natural gas arrives at the station at elevated pressure from the transmission network. Before it can be safely delivered to industrial customers or NGV refueling stations, the gas pressure must be reduced while maintaining accurate custody-transfer quality measurement.

Pressure reduction changes the gas density and operating conditions, making precise volume conversion essential for billing, process control, and regulatory compliance.

solution

The station combines:

  • MacMAT IV Flow Computer
  • MacREJ5 Data Logger

The system continuously acquires data from field instrumentation—including pressure, temperature, and flow sensors—and performs real-time gas volume conversion while recording operational data.

remote access
to process data

The collected information is transferred directly to the operator’s SCADA system using the Modbus RTU protocol. This gives the operating team remote access to device status, current process parameters and historical records. Remote access reduces the need for routine visits to the site. It also gives the operator earlier insight into changes in the installation, making it easier to detect unusual operating conditions. The result is a fully digital metering station capable of providing:

continuous operational visibility

high-accuracy gas volume conversion

real-time diagnostics

historical data logging

rapid detection of abnormalities

remote monitoring and control

meeting Mexican
metrological requirements

An essential aspect of the project was ensuring full compliance with Mexican metrological requirements while maintaining the measurement performance expected from European-engineered instrumentation.

Plum flow computers and data loggers are designed for applications in which reliable measurement is essential for accurate billing and safe process operation. By combining precise metrology, telemetry and industrial communication protocols, the project team created a solution tailored to the requirements of this particular station.

designed
for decades of operation

Devices used in gas infrastructure are expected to remain in service for many years. Frequent replacement or maintenance can be costly, especially when installations are located far from technical support facilities.

Plum devices are designed for an operational lifetime exceeding 25 years. This helps reduce lifecycle costs and supports stable performance throughout the service life of the installation.

where gas flows,
Plum technology works

The station in Querétaro is one of many Mexican installations using Plum solutions. Approximately 200 Plum devices are currently operating across the country, supporting gas utilities and industrial customers.

The number continues to grow as the gas industry becomes more digital. More operators are replacing manual readings with systems that automatically record data and transfer it to central supervision platforms.

The Querétaro project demonstrates how advanced measurement technology can be combined with local engineering expertise and adapted to the requirements of a specific market. The result is an installation that provides accurate data, continuous visibility and dependable operation for many years.
